The Bonus Army
The Bonus Army was a movement of WW1 veterans who marched on Washington DC in 1932. Demanding the benefits guaranteed to them by the U.S. government for fighting in the war, 43,000 veterans, their family members, and people marching in solidarity camped out in Washington. President Hoover and the U.S. Congress refused to meet their demands, and launched an assault with tanks and tear gas on the encampment. The encampment was burned, 55 veterans were wounded, 2 killed, 135 arrested. 12 week old Bernard Meyers died after being exposed to the tear gas.
The veterans came back to protest every year. In 1936, Congress finally passed legislation which gave the veterans their benefits. The struggle influenced the eventual passing of the GI Bill in 1944.

Attica Prison Uprising
September 9th marked the 40th anniversary of the Attica State Prison uprising. 1289 prisoners took over the prison, taking 40 guards as hostages. They set up an encampment in the yard, demanding removal of the warden, amnesty for those who had taken part in the revolt, and better conditions in the prison. What was incredible about the revolt was the unity amongst the prisoners. As one survivor of the urprising stated: “I never thought whites could really get it on. … But I can’t tell you what the yard was like, I actually cried it was so close, everyone so together.” They held out for 5 days, until the national guard, prison guards, and local police stormed the yard. Thirty one prisoners were killed, along with 9 guards in the brutal assault. Prisoners who had participated were sysematically beaten and tortured by the vengeful guards. The uprising inspired numerous other rebellions in other prisons. Here are some neat videos on the uprising:

9/11
"Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are."
St. Augustine
It really sickened me hearing people at SLC make cynical jokes about 9/11. Do these kids think they're too cool to feel sympathy?

The Spanish Earth
Today is the 75th anniversary of General Franco's failed coup against Spain's leftist republican government, which led to bloody civil war and nearly four decades of dictatorship and fascism.
Here is a documentary that was filmed to showcase the struggle of the Spanish Republican government and the common people as they fought to defend their freedom and autonomy from the invasion of the fascist rebels.

"A poet is reborn every time his poem is recited."
Facundo Cabral was a poet and songwriter from Argentina, who was ambushed and killed recently while on tour in Guatemala. Designated a "worldwide messenger of peace" by the United Nations, he was known for his eloquent and unwavering support for the poor and marginalized people of Latin America and across the world. The Story of Colors
This summer I've been working at the Dance Palace camp in Point Reyes. I've been dredging up old story books from when I was a kid to read to the campers, one of which is "The Story of Color" written in Spanish and English by Subcomandante Marcos and illustrated in clay murals by Domitila Dominguez . It is based off a folk tale from Chiapas and details how the ancient gods brought color to the world. More than an interesting creation myth, the story reminds us of the importance and beauty of all colors, peoples, and voices in the world.
Here is an online version of the story.

Hell W10
Hell W10 is a silent short film written and directed by Joe Strummer. Basically an extended Clash music video, the film concerns the exploits of crook Earl (Paul Simonon) and his fight against porn-dealing gangster Socrates (Mick Jones). Good stuff.

May Day
Today is the day to honor workers across the world. If you can, go to a rally. Do what you can to support working folks in these hard times. ¡Sí, Se Puede!
Although I can't make it to the rallies in the city, I'm honoring the day by studying for my finals. My parents and their ancestors worked hard so that I could get to have the education I'm blessed with. They came all the way from Ireland, Italy, and Mexico, sewed a lot of dresses, washed a lot of laundry, so that I could be at Sarah Lawrence. They sacrificed a lot to get me here, and all I have to do in return is write a few essays.

William Lloyd Garrison
“I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. . . I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.”

“Our enormously productive economy…demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…we need things consumed, burned up, replaced and discarded at an ever-accelerating rate.” – Victor LeBeau, Retail Analyst Post WW II

Cuts: 5 Pointz
5 Pointz Aerosol Art Center Inc. is an old five story factory building thats covered in graffiti by artists from all over the world. Located at Jackson avenue and Davis street in Queens, it's an awe inspiring sight I get to see every week as I take the 7 train to my internship at Brand Workers. Inside, it's honeycombed with the studios of artists, djs, mcs, filmmakers and photographers.
Unfortunately, 5 Pointz is being targeted by developers, who wish to convert the space into luxury condominiums and a shopping mall. 5 Pointz is a an incredible artistic achievement, and should not be vandalized by greedy suits. Take action, write letters, visit 5 Pointz, get out there and do something.
